No Beni.  Lindsay Davenport won her 3 Slams BEFORE Maria, therefore that gives her the privilege of the higher spot.

    oh, okie!

    merylstr@otenet.gr:

I agree with Philli on this one. I'll agree that maybe JJ had been the worst #1 of all time if she goes down without having won a Grand Slam. But now it's too soon to judge her. Winning Grand Slams and remaining in the top spot are both equally difficult. No, actually. In fact, staying in #1 is far more difficult than winning a Grand Slam or reaching the top spot, given that the last 2 can occur by luck...... Maybe not pure luck, but not because of undoubted skills either...

So, no. JJ isn't the worst #1 ever. Maybe some day we will be able to say that, but not yet.

P.S. None of the players on Tour right now is #1 material..... Maria and Serena are certainly the most talened ones, but that doesn't matter. The game needs another Justine Henin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    P.P.S. Kim Clijsters was #1 material !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a champion ! Cool

Oh, my dear Amarylis, how nice u sing about Belgium and it's multiple qualitiesStick out tongue

I am watching JJ at the moment, playing in Zurich !   Well, to me she does not show she is the number 1 in the world. Her body language is miserable !!

She looks not interested, every game is one too many !

It's her fourth tournament in a row so I'll cut her some slack.

    Time to rest now!

Four tournaments in row is admirable, five would be stupidity. Wink

I just watched it too. JJ looked tired out...as we all suspected. Nevertheless, Flavia had to take it to 3 sets.  She's a good player, she already beat Venus twice this year.

It doesn't take anything away from JJ's achievements over the last three weeks.... so lets not be unfair to her.

    I Agree.

    ...definitely will not.

She needs to rest now and prepare for the YEC or she'll be burned out by the time the championships come.

YEC = almost a GS = a big stage ==> she needs to win in a big stage

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

    JJ's comment after the Match.....

"I had no gas left in the tank," Jankovic said afterwards. "I am not a robot and after winning three titles in different time zones and climates I felt mentally and physically tired.

"But I will have two weeks off now to rest and train for the WTA Championships and hopefully end the year in the best possible way."

    Good Luck JJ.

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

Oh, and Midaso, just to show you how useless your comments about GS rankings are, here are so more useless ones.  The WTA has NOTHING to do with Grand Slams so, we have to fall back on the YEC Championships.

Still active players are as follows (in order of winning)

    1.   Lindsay Davenport.   1 Win

    2.   Serena Williams.      1 Win

    3.   Maria Sharapova.   1 Win

    4.   Amelie Mauresmo.   1 Win

Year End Number One.   (Still Active Players).

    1.   Lindsay Davenport ......  4 times.

    2.   Serena Williams.........   1 Time.

So you see Midaso, none of these statistics really reflect the events of any or the current year.  There is no such thing  as 'The Best' or 'The Worst' player as long as she is still active on the Tour.  Such a statement can only be made in retrospect when that player has retired  from the game and her career statistics can be analyzed in full.

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

And then, there is a truly exclusive club that has nothing to do with Grand Slams and only peripherally with WTA rankings, the Golden olimpioniki: Cool

    1988 - Steffi Graf, Germany
1992 - Jennifer Capriati, United States
1996 - Lindsay Davenport, United States
2000 - Venus Williams, United States
    2004 - Justine Henin, Belgium
    2008 - Elena Dementieva, Russia

Following the argument, it seems to me that there is not a unitary criterion of "best". I've held all along that, at a given moment, any given top player can potentially beat any other top player. The all-round greatest we've seen lately is Justine but, yeah, we can  make that appraisal because she did all that stuff and then retired when she peaked. So I have to agree that we can only know in hindsight, taking everything into account.

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

I'd say the chances of Jankovic winning the YEC are pretty low...

And Philli - what the hell are you on about?

No one cares about the year end champs - half the players are burnt out by then anyway...
