I'm not sure about the 'worst of all time'. She still has many chances to prove that she is not. I kind of feel sorry for her. She just keeps on losing and losing and losing and losing....

Hmmm well I can't think of anyone that has been worse than her. Huh?  Ahh well you are a nicer person than me, cos I don't really feel sorry for her - all the media kept making out like Ivanovic was this amazing and fantastic player that was gonna win loads of slams, and now they can all see what she is really like - not very good at all!!  Zip it!

I too could not think of anyone worse than her but I only followed tennis closely at the start of the 2006 season so I'm thinking there might be one in the past. Maybe Paul knows one. AngelWinkSmile

Ahh yayy we started following tennis around the same time!! Smile  And yeah there may be a worse number 1 than Ivanovic from the past, but I doubt it!  Hahahaha!

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

    Philli:

Here's something to think about.. In order to win a Grand Slam, a player has to win 7 matches in a row over a two week period.  Is that what makes a Grand Slam tough?

Well, JJ Not only won 8 matches in a two week period, but she went to to make it 12 in a row over a three week period.  Doesn't that qualify as being good......... regardless of the fact that it was 3 different Tournaments?

I think you lot overrate the importance of winning a Grand Slam when it comes to player ability.

Nope...it's not the same. At the GS you have the best of the best players and I didn't see all the best players in the 8 matches Jankovic won.  During the GS everybody gives their best and all players look at it from a different angle. It's not just another tournament - it is a GS tournament and that is a BIG DEAL for everybody. If it is not for you...I don't really care.

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

DIS IS AN ABSOLUTE RIDICULOUS TOPIC,JELENA IS A SUPERB PLAYER AND HAS DEFEATS OVER BOTH WILLIAMS THEY ARE SHITE, THEY THINK THEY CAN JUS PLAY FOR THE GRAND SLAMS AND OTHER FEW TOURNAMENTS WHILE ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS PLAY LOTS OF TOURNAMENTS NO WONDER DER WINNING GRANDSLAMS ANY PLAYER COULD WIN GRANDSLAMS PLAYING THAT LITTLE TENNIS A YEAR!!

AND AS FOR U PHILLI MARIA HAS DESERVED THE NUMBER 1 RANKING ON THE 3 OCASIONS YOU COULD JUST IMAGINE HOW MANY GRANDSLAMS SHE WOULD HAVE UNDER HER BELT AT THIS STAGE IF IT WASNT FOR THE SHOULDER INJURY.THE SHOULDER INJURY WILL ALWAYS BE THERE IT WILL COME BACK EVENTUALLY,IT HAPPENS U JUST GOTTA DEAL WITH IT,AND IM SURE IT WILL COME BACK ON HER AGAIN EVENTUALLY BUT SO WHAT, SHE HEALS IT COMES BACK AND BEATS EVERYBODY SO WHOS BOTHERED ONLY YOU!!!!

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

Look,in tennis,GRAND SLAMS are what the sport is ALL ABOUT

If you haven't won a grand slam, you haven't made a name for yourself

All the other tournaments are just warmups really...

The grand slams matter - it doesn't matter how many tournaments you win outside the slams, you MUST win a slam to be considered great

Just like in US Sports,a team could win the most games in regular season

A couple of years ago,the Mavericks won 67/82 regular season games in the NBA(one of the best records of all time) but got done in the playoffs, first round

That season will go down as a failure for them. Because it is WINNING A CHAMPIONSHIP that matters

As far as I'm concerned,Jankovic can win 100 titles, but until she breaks through and wins one that matters, she can't even be considered close to Serena or Venus Williams,Sharapova or Ivanovic...

So I guess you consider Kim Clijsters was nothing until she won the US Open in 2005, although she too made it to number 1 wíthout ever winning a GS.

Also in 2005, her comeback after injury she went from ranking 133 to Number 1 in one season....   Just luck I guess...nothing special.

If you can't win a Grand Slam but you can win 12 straight times in 3 tournaments back to back that means there's a problem. That could only mean one of two things, either you're extremely out of this world unlucky or you're unable to perform in the biggest stage of them all. If want to be remembered you have to perform on the biggest stage.

I'm not taking anything away from Kim. She's a great player and will be remembered as one but before she won that GS, I'm guessing people were saying the same thing.

...and why is it that you always talk about a different player every time you post in this thread. First, it was Maria then now Kim. can't say anything about JJ? Hmm

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

I'm simply trying to point out that JJ is not the only player to achieve the number 1 spot without first winning a GS.

Maria didn't get to number 1 the first time by winning Wimbledon, she got to it because Lindsay Davenport took time out from the Game due to injury.  As soon as she came back 6 weeks later, Maria lost the top spot again.... She has never been able to defend it.

But, according to Midaso, all games are unimportant and only Grand Slams matter, so, bearing that in mind..... The World Rankings of still active players should look like this:

    1.   Serena Williams   9 Wins

    2.   Venus Williams   7 Wins

    3.  Lindsay Davenport   3 Wins

    4.  Maria Sharapova   3 Wins

    5.  Amelie Mauresmo   2 Wins

    6.   Swetlana Kutznetsova   1 Win

    7.  Ana Ivanovic   1 Win

No it should be like this

    1.   Serena Williams   9 Wins

    2.   Venus Williams   7 Wins

    3.   Maria Sharapova   3 Wins

    4.   Lindsay Davenport   3 Wins

    5.  Amelie Mauresmo   2 Wins

    6.   Swetlana Kutznetsova   1 Win

    7.  Ana Ivanovic   1 Win

No Beni.  Lindsay Davenport won her 3 Slams BEFORE Maria, therefore that gives her the privilege of the higher spot.

Re: Is Jankovic the worst #1 of all time?

I agree with Philli on this one. I'll agree that maybe JJ had been the worst #1 of all time if she goes down without having won a Grand Slam. But now it's too soon to judge her. Winning Grand Slams and remaining in the top spot are both equally difficult. No, actually. In fact, staying in #1 is far more difficult than winning a Grand Slam or reaching the top spot, given that the last 2 can occur by luck...... Maybe not pure luck, but not because of undoubted skills either...

So, no. JJ isn't the worst #1 ever. Maybe some day we will be able to say that, but not yet.

P.S. None of the players on Tour right now is #1 material..... Maria and Serena are certainly the most talened ones, but that doesn't matter. The game needs another Justine Henin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    P.P.S. Kim Clijsters was #1 material !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a champion ! Cool
