Maria Defeats Daniela To Reach Kolkata
Final
KOLKATA, India - The final of this year's Sunfeast Open will
see Maria Kirilenko take on the tournament's surprise package, Mariya
Koryttseva, after both players came through tough semifinal examinations on
Saturday. No.4 seed Kirilenko saw off No.2 Daniela Hantuchova, while Koryttseva
overcame Anne Keothavong to reach her maiden career final at the $175,000, Tier
III event.
There was little to separate Kirilenko and Hantuchova in the early stages of
their semifinal, but it was the Slovak who took her chances in the opener,
breaking serve late on, to establish a one set to love lead. This was the first
set the 20-year-old Russian had dropped all week and she hit back in spectacular
fashion, reeling off the next two sets to reach her first final on the Sony
Ericsson WTA Tour for nearly two years, with a 46 62 61 triumph.
The victory was Kirilenko's first over Hantuchova in four attempts and
signals a return to form for the world No.35. In the opening seven months of the
season the young Muscovite won just 10 matches and consequently saw her ranking
plummet. However, since the start of the North American hardcourt swing she has
experienced and upturn in fortunes and success in Sunday's championship match
will result in a return to the Top 30.
The other semifinal involved two players outside the Top 100, Keothavong and
Koryttseva, who put on an entertaining match for the spectators in the Netaji
Indoor Stadium. Both players were appearing at this stage of a Tour event for
the very first time and it was the Ukrainian, Koryttseva, who settled the
quicker, breaking serve early in the first set.
Keothavong's run this week has seen her become the first Briton to appear in
the semifinals of a Tour event since 1992 and she was determined not to go down
without a fight. The 23-year-old Londoner fought her way back to force the
opener into a tie-break, but Koryttseva recomposed herself to take the first set
before moving into the final with a 76(3) 63 victory.
Koryttseva's success this week has not been confined to the singles court and
in the final match on Day 6 she moved into the final of the doubles competition,
alongside her Italian partner Alberta Brianti. The pair are playing just their
second event together in Kolkata and their reward for an enthralling 64 57 105
win over Monique Adamczak and Sunitha Rao, is a clash in the championship round
with the event's No.1 seeds Vania King and Alla Kudryavtseva.
