Re: Still a Russian Championship
paul_pipkin:That's a natural first reaction. With respect, however, I think you should look at the bigger picture. I don't know a lot about Srebotnik either--just that she's rather strange--a Slovene who lives and works under al-Maktoum patronage in Dubai.
But I can talk to you about Russians. Do you know that Marat & Dinara's mum was Elena's first coach, back in the Spartak days? And that Vera & Elena are still good friends with the Safins? Svetlana is as solid as she looks. When she bested Elena in the 2004 USO final (and knew little English then), Kuzi relied on Elena to speak for them both. Don't see that very often. Nadia stepped up last year and, with Vesnina, saved the Fed Cup when even Shamil feared all was lost. Her name is Russian for Hope. Your commentator "Sam" Smith marveled at how Petrova fights on, "held together with glue and bits of tape...". And I could name a bunch more.
They are all sisters, however they may feud from time to time. (Hey, they are Russians. An Italian may get highly emotional as an afterthought to lunch, but when a Russian gets emotional, it's scary. lol!) These are all outstanding women. I'll post more on the Elegant Elena thread.
Awesome story...would make for great Novel!!! Now, where could I find a writer who knows a lot of things about Russian tennis!? hehe

No surprise that I've piddled around with a project along those lines?
So, I watched Kuzi take down Srebotnik 76(5) 62 (pretty much as Elena should have but wasn't able yesterday). Kuzi grabbed control and slowed the match's pace a bit. Then I saw the first part of Dinara/Nadia before the streams collapsed. "On paper the 61 60 wasn't a shock, as Safina outranks Petrova by 15 spots; the result totally defied the pair's head-to-head though, as Safina had lost all five previous encounters."

I've messed around with a romance in that setting. There are a few chapters roughed out. If I spent less time "researching" (watching tennis), I might have it finished already. lol!

I had a feeling you might be writing something along those lines but to find out that you're actually writing one is just awesome!!! I'm not a big reader but I'd surely read this one!!! What surprised me is it being a romance ....I didn't see that coming. Good luck on writing the book!!! I hope to read it one day. I thought Safina and Kuzni's match should have started by now...I better check the schedule.

SAFINAAAAAAAAAA win

Congrats to the Champion! Dinara played just fine.
That said, Kuzi really was drained. She woke up a bit in the second set but: coming straight from Fed Cup, the exertions against JJ (really the best match I saw in this tournament), and the excessive heat with the roof open when she played Srebotnik really took it out of her. Now she goes direct to Beijing. I hope she gets down time before Moscow. I don't want to see her this worn down at Kremlin Cup.

Re: Still a Russian Championship
Well done Dinara! Took her just 1 hour and 20 minutes... But I kinda expected that 'cause Kuzi doesn't seem to play well in the finals (like in Indian Wells). It's really cool to see Dinara coming out of nowhere and now look at her, she's #3 in the rankings.
MASHA, NOLE, JJ, ROGER, GOOD LUCK IN 2009! YOU ROCK!!! MY ROGER !!!!!!!!! A lover of: Mad Russians Dramatic, smiley, gorgeous looking, squeaky shoed Serbians Golden Team Fedrinka And that Belgian chocolate lover (come back Juju!!!)

Congratulations as well to Nadia Petrova (RUS) & Vania King ( USA) for taking the doubles championship. That's a combination I like to see!
