Yeah, yeah, there's all kinds of hacks with Olympic Gold in their pockets, I'm so sure. Stick out tongue

    Yeah,that's right

Nadal was the first gold medal winner ranked in the top 5

Maybe in the men's game; I dunno. But I'm pretty sure Venus at Sydney & Justine at Athens were in the top five when they won their Gold. (Far as that goes, Elena re-entered the top five when new rankings were posted a few hours after her victory--if you want to split hairs.) Wink

Hey, if the guys have Roddick's contempt for the Games and generally send only their second string, that's their business. I don't actually care, to tell the truth. There are some tourneys--like the New Haven that just wrapped--where I don't even know which guys are playing.

Well 99.99% of people don't care about women's tournaments outside the grand slams

And for good reason. Who cares who won the women's in the past anyway - 99.99% of people think that tennis shouldn't be at the olympics

Just tell me - why it is that you must be such a fan of women's tennis when it is so obviously laughably bad?

When I watch sports - I like to see the very best on offer

The women are terrible - watch the best players in the game - the men

They hit with a lot more power and still make a fraction of the unforced errors that women make...

Andy must be crying back home by now. He didn't even win a single tournament in his prep fo the US open. The worst part about it is that he is the only "big name" in all of the tournaments he entered, no Roger, no Rafa, No Djoko. LOL!

and Midaso, we already get it that women's tennis doesn't interest you one bit.

    Re: Elegant Elena

Bollocks, midaso. 1) The advertising dollar on the women's game exceeds the men's. 2) What to make of Eurosport, which deals primarily in women's tennis, or the extent of Arab promotions behind the same? 3) Most telling: the extensive Chinese tennis program focused almost entirely on the women--on that alone don't give me some absurd "99% of people."

Who are down on the women are the Yank sportsmeisters and their peons abroad--solely because (for the above reasons) they can no longer dominate or control them. You wanna put yourself in that camp with a buncha dumb rednecks & what-not, fine.

Finally, you wrote, "They (men) hit with a lot more power..." Duh. That's why there are two different games--because of physiological differences. They will always be different games. Cross-gender contests are a fun novelty but, on the whole, that's all they'll ever be. On the forum of a woman player, it shouldn't amaze that some of us are fans of one game over the other. Rafa, Fed, others--great athletes, great guys. It's not necessary to tear down another game to build them up. Give it a rest.

    Re: Elegant Elena

Komsomol Pravda reports that tickets to the final cost about 600 dollars. Nevertheless, Russian fans purchased them and it is very offensive that many were made late to the match. Organizers transferred it to 2 hours in the afternoon, (14:00) when, under the regulations, it was supposed to begin at four (16:00).

Elena will get a tat honoring her victory! Surprise (Cleaned-up translation from Russian http://www.kp.ru/daily/24147/364248/ )

Lena simply shone from happiness, and at the press conference answered immediately in three languages - English, French and Russian.

“I am very happy. I’ve thought about Olympic Gold since losing in the Sydney final. They always asked me which I wanted more: to win a Grand Slam or Olympiad. I dreamed to become precisely the Olympic champion. Tennis – due to the commercial form of the sport, many tennis-players first of all think about the prize. I am different - it was not because of the money that it always pleased me to win tennis.”

How will you commemorate the Olympiad?

“I saw that many Olympic champions get themselves five-ring tattoos for the memory. Earlier I regarded tattoos extremely negatively. But here, I do think it can to me immortalize my victory.”

Will you go for a (victory) walk in the Olympic Village?

“In Sydney Aleksey Nemov observed his victory in the adjacent housing. I will be more modest. Especially because we fly away tomorrow. I will jump to Moscow in order to see Mom. To her I devote all my victories. But then immediately to America, where soon starts the US Open.

Is it time to win the tournament of large helmet…

“I know; I am called the eternally second. I was the second at that Grand Slam. But I look at it this way: I tell itself that this (the Gold) was the first final. Briefly stated, to everything its time. And it was here now possible for me to bring together everything - tactics, technology and psychology. I hope that now will follow other victories, although I am not guaranteed this next US Open. After everything was over, many emotions splashed out. Yes, even weather in Beijing was very hot. I am very tired. But I am happy.”

After the defeat of 8 years ago in Sydney, you promised to break racket. Did you break it?

“I do not remember. Surely not, I am peaceful girl.”

Did you have any talismans or signs at the Olympiad, which helped you to conquer?

“I ordered three court dresses. Each of a different color - under the colors of the Russian flag. But I always played in one. (Blue on white.) How could I change after the first victory?”

    The winners

    Elena became "gold"

    Tribunes of tennis

Russian Minister of Sport Vyacheslav Fetisov and First Vice-Premier Sergey Ivanov cheer Elena's victory. Cool

    Call that great English?

I'd hate to think where women's tennis would be without Maria and the Williams sisters...

No women's tournaments even come close to the ATP Masters Series events

Just as well they don't get equal pay...

    Re: Elegant Elena

In the States, the Williams era has damaged the game as much as benefitted it. The generation of Williams clones is largely a wash. They say we're getting some sharp kids again in Juniors--if that's so, I'll give all the credit to Masha.

But look, I'm not inclined to polemicize further on this on the Elena thread--I want people to see the material about her. Cool

Ditto Parmentier--in less than an hour. Party!!! Next up is Keothavong, who I don't think Elena has met before either. Anne took out Schiavonne in a hard match today, but you know Francesca. I'm not too worried.

We are probably looking at a Russian quarterfinal (Round of 16 Embarrassed) with Makarova (less likely) or Na Li. Hmm Not so easy. The China girls are inspired and motivated. But we shall see. Cool

A reporter ran down Elena on an outside practice court about 15:00. (Yeah, they chase her for interviews now--believe that ? That thar Gold is magic! Smile She spoke very nicely of Anne, but you can tell she's brimming with confidence.

Not a thing against Keothavong--I've noted her at Wimbledon & elsewhere. Of course, I'm still behind the Golden Girl, but it should be a fine match. Cool
