"I never expected a medal - gold, silver or bronze," said Dementieva, 26. "It's unbelievable. For me this is the best moment in my career. I'll never forget it."
Russia swept the medals in women's singles when Vera Zvonareva beat Li Na of China 6-0, 7-5 to win the bronze. That victory made Russia the first nation to win all three medals in one tennis event since Britain did so in the 1908 women's singles. (Tennis was not a medal sport between 1924 and 1988.)

Shamil Tarpischev put the medals on each girl and kissed each on both cheeks. The ITF president presented each with flowers. During the Hymn of the Russian Federation, Elena stood with her feet planted apart and her arms at her sides as the three Russian flags were raised on poles, that rather fierce smile of hers on her lips. Then the girls did a victory stroll around Centre Court with the Russian flag--the commentators mentioned that the large groups of red shirts in the stands were Russians (rather than Chinese)... It was all rather moving in a kinda refined and low-key fashion.

Wow!! Great Britain won all 3 medals at women's singles tennis at the Olympics!! I don't care if it was a century ago!! I am so happy - I never knew we were good at tennis ever!! Hahaha! Thanks for that info Paul!!
Also thanks Paul for posting the pictures and again congrats to Elena! Hopefully she will do well at the US Open too!!
One sad thing about this is that it's not on the news. I just visited Yahoo! sports and there's no news about the Russians dominating the women's singles, not even a trace. Not even in CNN. pff! They're being too obvious!!! This is event one for the record books, right!???

Can we expect better from Yankee Yahoo or the Yahoo-controlled Eurosport? When she was runner-up at the USO, Elena D made a speech about 911 & Breslan schoolhouse that had the New Yorkers on their feet cheering. That scared the piss outta our sportsmeisters & they've blacked her out ever since. I'm not finding much on Yelena Isinbayeva's world-record vaulting Gold, either, and the only time I've seen her on NBC, she was taking a nap. Remember--the US is presently bent on reigniting the Cold War.
It's the news in Russia, though. Translated from Sportbox.ru:
Beijing - 2008: Our tennis players completed exploit, recounts Tarpishchev.
President of the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpishchev, is confident that the Russian women’s achievements at the Beijing Olympiad will remain through the centuries. “To take entire pedestal at the Olympiad is very complicated,” sport correspondent Dmitriy Lukashov quotes Tarpishchev. “We repeated the feat of the Englishmen in 1908. All the girls deserved gold, to be honest.
“And there was no more stressed women’s tournament, either in this year, or in the previous Olympic Games. Therefore what they did -- simply an exploit. Especially Safina, who exerted more than all. That Dinara with such unfavorable circumstance, when after taking a match to 3:35 the previous night, played at the 16:00 following and knew how to win - simply fantastic.
“That said, however, does not diminish the merits of Dementieva. Three times she was in the big finals and lost. Now God has rewarded.”

Sports should transcend politics, religion, nationality and race. At least that's what I thought. What's happening here is really sad.

Yeah I know what you mean Beni! They hardly talked about it here, but it could have been because Great Britain was winning loads of medals at the Olympics, and when that happens it is all over the news!! They go mad about it! When Rebecca Adlington won her 2nd gold medal and broke the world record they were talking about it every few minutes! Hehehe! But I thought they would talk about the tennis a bit, cos it is big news - all 3 medals to Russia!! That doesn't happen everyday!!!
By the way, I LOVE your signature Beni - it's the best!!!
NOLE - Masters Cup 2008 CHAMPION!!!!
