Fed Cup: Russia outplay Serbia in 5-match thriller Published 08 February, 2010, 01:21

Russia's goal of a third fed cup triumph in four years remains on track after a tough opening round clash with Serbia. Shamil Tarpishchev's team edged the hosts 3-2 overall. Jelena Jankovic gave the homeside a 2-1 lead on Sunday after a three-set win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Alisa Kleybanova then equalised matters with victory over former world number one Ana Ivanovic. That meant it was all down to the doubles rubber, which Russia sealed with ease in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Russia will now meet the US in the semi-finals, while reigning champions Italy will contend with the Czech Republic.

After the match, Svetlana said of the April 24-25 semifinal in the USA:

“I hope all the best Russian players will be there.”

Maria Sharapova should play at the Fed Cup 2010. A victory of her team will gave a better image of herself in the world of Sport. It is important for her ad. She can promote her new Racket and new Nike dress. Millions of people will watch her playing. People will tell that Maria Sharapova was here and her team won. It is exactly the same when she played for team Russian in Hong Kong. She was here and the team won. Nadal also helped his team the last time.

Re: Sharapova in Belgrade Arena clash

A couple of colotful postscripts on Belgrade from Soviet Sport:

The team of Russia conquered on the departure Serbia in the decisive paired match

    on February 8, 2010, #17- M (18036) A. Grishchenko

YESTERDAY. Belgrade. SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA AND ALISA KLEYBANOVA: THEY CELEBRATE OUTPUT INTO THE SEMI-FINAL, WHERE GUEST ENCOUNTER WITH THE COMMAND OF THE USA WAITS THE RUSSIAN WOMEN

Source: Reuters EVENT OF DAY. TENNIS
    GOBLET OF FEDERATION. 1/4 FINALES

The place of conducting the match of the goblet of federation - “Belgrade Arena” - is similar to our “Olympic” stadium. Not only the most important matches of volleyball and basketball are played here - about this resembles the monument at the main entrance, which consists of the winch also of enormous dark-blue sphere, but also musical concerts...

Next to “Belgrade Arena” - the “Fair Play” cafe and the Djokovic restaurant with the modest name “Novak”. Wink Place is comfortable, despite the fact that it's always crowded. In the menu - Serbian kitchen, the wine of limited runs. Here it is possible to meet the parents of Serbian tennis-player, who, they say, live nearby. Here at the adjacent table sits the mom of Djokovic--the entire evening this youthful blonde gaily associates with friends and smokes thin ladies' cigarettes.

    Svetlana:
It was not clear until the last moment, who would defend the colors of Russian and Serbian flags. Thus, the first members of both commands - Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic - gave their agreement to participation in the Fed Cup match at the last moment. And if Jankovic indicated as the her back injury, for some reason they then in the case of Kuznetsova considered conflict with the captain an issue.

"This is 'special tactics' from Kuznetsova", joked back Shamil Tarpischev. "To all the girls thanks, that they agreed to represent Russia, because it is hard to play after Australia, yes even the goblet of federation to follow tournaments on another continent. Therefore the first round is especially hard."

"You somehow did mention, that Kuznetsova has the starry disease?" - a Serbian journalist turned to Tarpischev.

"That said in the press does not correspond to truth. We frequently joke, we speak allegorically. But the press frequently untwists facts that it is not necessary to untwist," said Tarpischev. "It was noticeable that in the relations between our best tennis players and captain everything is wonderful. They joked at the press conferences, they talked between themselves, they laughed. Many remarks and jokes about Tarpischeva were inverted at that sitting by Svetlana."

Dartagnan you are a pain in the ass.  Those pics from 2008 were all just a PR Gag for Maria to get a ticket to the Olympics.  Otherwise, she doesn't give a rat's ass about the Fed Cup.

I hate to say that Philli is damn right, but all the players have the same goal so she has the right for that just like the other players. Fed Cup = Olympics so I fully understand and respect it.

Re: Sharapova in Fed Cup 2010

Sure, it's the necessary conduit to the Olympics but that's not all Fed Cup represents. Dementieva has played thirty-five Fed Cup matches--far beyond what she had to do to arrive at that Gold Medal.

Some of ATP now want to reduce Davis Cup to every two years--reduce it to nothing but an Olympic conduit. Y'know what? I suspect they're the same ones who don't want tennis in the Olympics at all. Why? They don't like the authority of IOC because it supports ITF as the governing body of world tennis. Both the ATP & WTA bureaucrats would like to destroy ITF so they & their corporate sponsors could dominate the sport unregulated.

That's who is behind the incessant attempts to degrade the ITF Davis, Fed Cup & even Hopman events.

Players and fans must support the Cups & national federations must support the ITF if we want tennis to remain free & fair to any degree.

Russia won in Belgrade. They will next play the US in the US on April 24-25 semifinal. We are waiting to find out exactly where. It will be some weeks before anything comes out on who the teams may be.

Masha still plays in Memphis next week. Geeked

Re: Sharapova in Fed Cup 2010

Of course she will.  Cant turn down all that start money and the chance to beat a few low ranked players.  She can only hope that Oudin will be jet lagged from Paris and get knocked out in the early rounds by another player.
