Russia destroy Latvia in Olympics opener

    Edited 17 February, 2010, 19:54

Team Russia has made an impressive start in its quest for gold in the men's Olympic ice hockey tournament. Vyacheslav Bykov's men had no problems in their opening Group B game against Latvia.

The reigning world champions thrashed their opponents, 8-2.

Aleksandr Ovechkin and Danis Zaripov each claimed a brace, Ilya Kovalchuk and Evgeny Malkin had a goal and an assist each, and Sergey Fedorov came off the rink with two assists under his belt.

The only disappointment this evening was Evgeny Nabokov’s might-have-been shootout.

“It is only the first game, but I am sure it will be different in the second game. We have to play desperate,” Kovalchuk assured after the game.

“A few things we would like to change. But it's the first game,” said defender Sergey Gonchar, echoing Kovalchuk. “Still, I like what we had,” he added.

Russia plays its next game on Thursday night against Slovakia.

Elsewhere, in Group A, Canada and the United States both won their opening games.

The Olympic hosts began their Olympic hockey tournament by hammering Norway, scoring eight goals against zero from the Scandinavian side.

The United States also showed confidence, beating hard nut Switzerland 3-1.

Bykov: Ovechkin is nuclear power plant on skates

Post game interview with team Russia's head coach Vyacheslav Bykov by Stanislav Guscha, SportBox.ru:

Do you think you didn't give enough playing time to Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin?
Is was important for us in the first game to let all the players to get into the game and to everyone to have enough time on the ice. Everyone in our team is an excellent player and everyone wants to have a lot of ice time. But we will use the potential of the players like Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk much more in the future, of course.

Today Ovechkin was tireless. There was an impression that he can never run out energy.
The energy potential of Alexander is very impressive. He can be compared with the nuclear power plant. He plays hockey which is ahead of this generation. But lately Ovechin played four games in five days, and it is important to control his ice time. Despite the fact that the tournament is short, we still have five games ahead of us, and they are very important.

In this game you didn't have some kind of preference of the power play unit, why?
In our team all four quintets are very strong. It is important that every time they go out on the ice, they should use the time allotted to them to the maximum. In this game we gave the opportunity to play PP to all quintets. But in the future we will have special teams, as they call them.

Russians are considered the favorite, but who are the favorites in your opinion?
    I think it's Canadians.

HOW DOES MARIA SHARAPOVA FIND LOVE?

    Maria Sharapova's interview

“You have a dog,” I observe. “I do,” she replies. “Dolce?” “Yes, Dol-chay,” she says. “You like dogs?” “I love Dolce,” she replies, and explains that while she finds other dogs cute, she only ever pets Dolce. “It’s hard for me to love other people’s dogs,” she says, “because I feel they don’t belong to me but with my dog it’s different . . . I mean, if I loved a guy as much as I love my dog, the guy would be in serious trouble because I’m all over that dog, all of the time. Like, just now I was eating lunch and he was like begging me . . . it’s so cool.”

And that’s when it happens. Suddenly, inexplicably, I start to envy her dog. I want to be Dolce. I want to die and come back as that fluffy Pomeranian pooch and for the next five minutes I completely derail. It’s like that scene from American Beauty when Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is watching his daughter’s cheerleading rally and is mesmerised by her cute, blonde friend. I gazed at Sharapova with eyes as big as dinner plates and was suddenly skiing off piste . . .

“How does Maria Sharapova find love?” I inquire.

“God! That’s an unusual question,” she coughs. “Erm, I don’t know. I think the key is not to search for it. At the end of the day, I’m still only 23. It’s tough for me to say, ‘This is how I’m going to find my love; this is who I’m going to marry’. Especially with my life...”

“This is how Martina Hingis once explained it,” I announce: “When you’re home, a lot of the time with guys you think, ‘Why do they like me? Is it for me? Or is it my money or because I am a tennis player?’”

“Right ... so?” “You can’t identify with that?” I press.

“Well, I think you’ve got to be able to trust the person,” she says. “You’ve got to look them in the eye and ... I mean, I’m not a fortune teller; I’m not a psychic; I can’t tell you if they love me for who I am or the person that’s on TV and making money. And if they can’t love me for what’s inside me, it will be ‘goodbye’ and I’ll meet someone that will.”

“Have you met him yet?” “No.” “You’ve never been in love?” “I don’t know, I’ve had different types of love, you know? I’ve had, like, crushes in my career but I don’t think they’ve been love (she laughs). Maybe we’ll be sitting here in five years’ time and I’ll be able to tell you.”

    “Do you enjoy being famous?”

“Do I? Erm ... I do, but fame to me is ... I think the word is a big cliche because at the end of the day, I’m like any other person. But it’s nice to be recognised for what I do.”

Nearly 35,000 volunteers will take part in both the preparations for and the organization of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. Any person of age in Russia can become an Olympic volunteer.  Now all wishers can visit the website of the Organizing Committee of the Sochi Olympics and receive all the information they need. An International Volunteer Centre is planned to open soon because Sochi invites volunteers from other countries too.

The preparations for the major sporting event of the year 2014 are going at full steam. It is necessary not only to complete the construction of all sports facilities on time but also to build thee new hotels and to reconstruct the old roads. Of great importance here is to find and train the people who will work with both the guests and participants of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. And volunteers would be of great help here.

“Volunteers will be the first to welcome the athletes at the Sochi airport. And the success of the Olympic Games will be dependent on the impression the volunteers will produce on the athletes," the Chief of the Department on Youth Policy under the Sochi administration Andrei Bezrodnov says. "Of course, we understand perfectly well that the Sochi Olympic Games will be held in 2014. Many testing events in all Olympic types of sports are due to take place ahead of the year 2014. That is why we’ll need a great number of volunteers as early as 2010. Competitions in alpine skiing and in giant slalom skiing will be held this December. And beginning from February, 2011, big sports events will be held, practically, every 2 months. That is why 300 people we have today will be insufficient.  We plan to prepare about 1,000 volunteers, that is, the so-called “mobile chain”, before the end of this year."

There’s no doubt that students will make up the backbone of the volunteer corps. A contest for the right to become volunteer centres has been declared among the higher educational establishments in Russia. A volunteer team, including representatives of 17 regions, has already been formed, a member of the Sochi -2014 volunteer team, Marina Pakalova, says. She has already worked as a volunteer during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and is ready to share experiences with the members of her team.

"Fifteen institutes to prepare volunteers in various fields will be chosen all over Russia by December. Eleven fields have already been named. Work will be done to prepare medics, transport workers, IT specialists, interpreters, and of course, specialists to work with Paralympians. This will really be a very serious and wide-scale programme covering the whole country."

According to the organizers of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, volunteers will not have to pay for either transportation to or food at their new place of work. Besides, they will receive Olympic badges and other marks of distinction. Volunteers will only have to pay for the lodging. Such is the world practice. The main work to attract volunteers will start in 2012.
