The former U.S. figure-skating champion; Kwan reminded the children that hard work and persistence are a large part of the success of athletes like herself or Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin or former Wimbeldon champion Maria Sharapova — both Russian natives.
"Keep on working hard, and your dreams — such a great thing — will come true," Kwan said "A lot of my dreams came true."

Yuri Yudkin, 73, was Maria's first coach when she was 4-7. He said. "[Maria] was a very smart girl . . . I never had to repeat instructions twice to her."

Merry Russian Orthodox Christmas to Alex, Sasha, and Semyon!

The Russian Orthodox Christmas (Jan. 7th) greetings to Caps' Russians by our blog reporter Emily:

In the spirit of the season, we thought long and hard about what to get for these three fine men who pretty much want for nothing. And we realized the one thing they were missing. We made a quick call to the US State Department, explained the situation, and our items arrived - just in time for Christmas.

For Ambassador Ovechkin, chef de mission of the Russian delegation to the US Capitals,

    Consul General Alexander Semin,

and embassy attaché Semyon Varlamov, we have procured these lovely diplomatic license plates.

They will make it much easier to find parking over by Russia House and speed limits a distant memory.

    Best wishes and
    С Рождеством Христовым!

It's so odd. I'm now a middle-aged man infatuated (for the first time) with this girl Sharapova as anyone seeing and hearing her would be. Among my fondest hopes for her are that she marry a man worthy of her and beget 3 or more great kids, yet I doubt anybody is worthy of her short of some manifestation of God almighty.

I would settle for a fellow with a lifetime devotion to her, who is roughly physically comparable to her [Dolph Lundgren(bright MIT grad and actor) minus 15 years],Christian of 'noble character' with a strong 'social consciousness' loyal to Russia and the Northern Nations.

And Sochi sounds like a good place for the 2014 Olympics.

Golden Words. I have the same feeling for Maria Sharapova. I think at the moment she hasn’t found her better half yet. At this period of her life (22 year old); her career should be more important than a partner. I remember that Steffi Graf was at the top of her career at this age. But in the future I would like her to find a man of her level in sport (who won plenty of trophies), an honest man who has a heart of a child.

I am also happy that she is an ambassador of Sochi 2014.

Ovechkin NHL's first star on the month, January 2010

Good way to start the new year for Ovi...

NHL.COM:While the Capitals had their best month of the season, it should surprise no one that their chief superstar, Alex Ovechkin, also had his best month.

After totaling 9 goals, 26 points and a plus-16 rating in 15 games, Ovechkin was named NHL Player of the Month for January.

He had just 1 game-winning goal, but his 17 assists were the most he's had in a month this season, and he also was named team captain Jan. 5. His strong play helped the Caps go 13-2-0 in January, their best month of the season, and take control of the Eastern Conference standings.

Second: Henrik Sedin -- We're not even into February and the Vancouver Canucks center already is having the best season of his career. His 6 goals in 13 January games gave him 25 for the season, three better than his previous career high. And his 25 points not only gave him a League-high 78, but moved him within 4 points of his best-ever season.

Third: Tomas Vokoun -- The Florida goalie is doing his best to keep the Panthers in the playoff hunt. He went 8-4-2 in January, but allowed just 21 goals in 14 games, giving him a 1.50 goals-against average, .958 save percentage and four shutouts.

It is not because Maria Sharapova doesn’t go out with Alex Ovechkin that she doesn’t like him. Alex Ovechkin is Maria’s compatriot and she respects him.

I am not spamming I told you the truth. Alex Ovechkin is the best NHL ice hockey player.
