Yeah so you can write about football from any league and country:  Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy) and so on!!  Oh also you can talk about the national teams, anything really!

    Re: FOOTBALL!!

OK since I am a massive Chelsea fan, I have a bit of Chelsea news:

    Lampard agrees new Chelsea deal

Luiz Felipe Scolari and Frank Lampard
Lampard has opted to stay and work under new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has signed a new five-year contract which will keep him at the club until 2013.

The England international had run into the final year of his deal and was a target for Inter Milan, who are managed by ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

But Lampard, who held out for a long-term contract, has finally agreed a new deal which he says will keep him at the club for the rest of his career.

Lampard, 30, moved to Stamford Bridge from West Ham for £11m in June 2001.

"I see it as my final big contract and I will play out my days at Chelsea," said Lampard after signing his new deal on Wednesday. "I want to finish my career at Chelsea.

"It is something I've said many times and, after signing this contract, I am very happy and positive I will finish as a player here."

"I've had seven great seasons here and now I can have many more," he told Chelsea TV.

"It's been a difficult summer for many reasons and that was one of them. A lot of things were said that were untrue, some things were said that were slightly true... and that was frustrating.

"Now we can put that to bed and concentrate on football."

Speculation surrounding the goal-scoring midfielder rumbled on throughout the season as the Londoner entered the final year of his previous contract - and it intensified when former Blues boss Mourinho tabled a bid to take him to Inter Milan after he became their manager in June.

"Everyone knows [Inter] Milan made a bid for me and that was something I had to look at," Lampard admitted.

"That was a possibility when we knew they had made an offer for me, I had to make a decision for myself and this club has been very, very good to me.

"I don't see any squads as strong as us. I feel very excited to be part of the future and now hopefully we can win back some titles."

He also thanked the club for giving him time to decide on his future, especially in light of the death of his mother in April.

"My world got turned upside down and I don't think it is anything anyone appreciates until you go through it," added Lampard. "The club gave me time and I appreciate that.

"I feel for sure I've made 100% the right decision, for myself, for my family and for Chelsea Football Club."

He also touched on reports which suggested Chelsea had only been willing to offer Lampard a four-year contract, with the player holding out for a longer deal.

"It has taken a while to get the deal done and there has been a bit of compromise on both sides," he said.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon admitted that contract talks had dragged on, but only because it was such a major decision for Lampard to make.

"It's taken both Frank and the club longer than we originally thought," he said.

"These are big issues for the club, for Frank and any other player.

"Whatever has gone on I think there is that underlying desire that we get there. This is a great day for the club."

When he joined the club in July new Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari immediately made plain his desire to keep hold of Lampard, as he considers the player a crucial ingredient within his squad.

"He is a key player for me and vital to Chelsea's future successes," Scolari said.

"Frank is one of the best professionals I have worked with. Every day he tries to learn something and bring new elements to his game."

Lampard has made 247 appearances for Chelsea and scored 71 goals.

Wooohoooo!!  Lampard is staying!!!  Thank God for that - he is a very influential player for us, and he will continue to be for 5 more years!!!  I am sooo happy - I thought he would leave for Inter Milan, but he stayed!!!  Yippeeee!!  Party!!! Party!!! Party!!!

    Re: FOOTBALL!!

good idea Dee, i'm annoyed because we played standard liege tonight ( iknow who?) and we could only draw, we literally created no chances and they were all over us, i'm very annoyed considering the season starts on saturday. The passing was extremely incoherent, we looked like we had no confidence and it looked like the beginning of pre season again, most of my optimism has gone, the worst thing is everyone is already criticizing the new players. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Angry

Yeah I know Tom, I just finished watching the match too, and you're right - Liverpool did not play well at all!!  They were lucky not to lose the match actually, and I felt really sorry for Standard Liege (who I had never heard of!) cos they played well and should have won in the end!!  Your optimism is gone - hehehe I never had any faith in Liverpool anyway!  No I'm only kidding!  Stick out tongue  But you will probably beat them in the 2nd leg cos it's at Anfield, and you play really well at home!!  And Sophie - Liverpool winning the Champions League - hahaha I don't think so on this performance!!

Oh and I have a question for you Tom: has Torres had his hair cut?  I understand if you don't know - I know you were probably watching the match and not his hair, but it looks shorter to me. Hmm

I know we are meant to be talking about football on this thread, but I am just going to divert to Torres' hair again for a minute. Embarrassed  I thought it looked quite good tonight, but I really think he should cut it short and spike it up!!  That might look very good!!!

    Re: FOOTBALL!!

    NEWS STORY
    RAFA: WE WERE LUCKY
Paul Hassall at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne 13 August 2008
Rafael Benitez admitted his side were lucky to escape with a draw after they produced a below-par display in the first-leg of the Champions League qualifier with Standard Liege.

The Reds boss was frustrated that his side could not reproduce their good pre-season form against the Belgian champions but feels the Anfield factor will play a vital role when the two sides meet at Anfield in a fortnight's time.

"I think we were lucky not to concede," said Benitez.

"You never know what is going to happen when a game gets underway but clearly we didn't play well.

"The performance was poor but the result was good. We didn't concede away from home which is always important and to play the second-leg at Anfield could make a massive difference.

"The positive thing was the result and we didn't have to say too much about the display in the dressing room because everybody already knew it wasn't good."

The Reds struggled to come to terms with Liege's fast start to the contest and Benitez felt his side were their own worst enemy and was grateful to keeper Pepe Reina for securing a 0-0 draw with a first-half spot-kick save.

"They were very aggressive and we could not keep the ball," he said.

"Our passes were bad and we always lost the first and second ball.

"In the first 20 minutes they were on top of us and after that we controlled it a bit more.

"In the second-half they started the same way and played more long balls and continued to win the first and second balls and if you don't win them you will continue to be under pressure.

"I was a little bit surprised because we were playing well in pre-season with a lot of confidence.

"I told the players before, after watching their Super Cup game against Anderlecht, that it could be like this.

"We knew they could be very aggressive. They were organised and pressed well and it was difficult for us to keep the ball.

"I think the entire team didn't play well; so the strikers, midfielders and defenders didn't play well and Pepe Reina was man of the match."

With Javier Mascherano, Lucas Leiva and Ryan Babel all on Olympic duty and the likes of Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel out injured, Benitez felt his side lacked options on the bench and admitted he had been forced to bring skipper Steven Gerrard into the frame to try and inspire a late rally.

"We have a lot of players away or injured and the competition for the places needs to improve," he continued.

"Gerrard couldn't start and he is a player who can change a game and if you have two or three players of this level on the pitch it is different.

"We were talking with the doctor before the match and we knew he couldn't start and we were thinking maybe we could use him and in the end we did need him.

"I have been really pleased with the commitment of the players in the pre-season but this game was different, it was difficult and we didn't play well.

"Fabio Aurelio and Skrtel have been training and when they are available we will have more options.

"Argentina play Holland in the Olympics too, so one player will return earlier. If you have more players competing for places it is better for the team."

nice to hear another postive interview from rafa. Tongue Tied

    Re: FOOTBALL!!

The Premier League starts on Saturday!!!  Only 2 days to go!!  I am sooooo excited!  I can't wait.  Hopefully Chelsea will make a good start and build up a lead over Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal.

My prediction is that the Premiership will end like this:

    1. Cheslea (champions Big Smile)

    2. Manchester United Ick! Devil  (but hopefully they will get relegated!!  Hehehehe!  I know that will never happen though!)

    3. Arsenal (but I hope they come 2nd cos I live in Arsenal territory and most of my friends support them!)

    4. Liverpool (sorry Tom!)
